BECAUSE

I’ve been tracing the tree tops with a piece of charcoal.

Because it is fuzzy on the edges and funny to the touch,

Because it becomes one with the sky at a certain point,

Because it could be soft, it could be stark,

It could be pointed on top and yet fall downward

Into the spine of the earth, where there are no leaves.

I’ve been painting the tops of churches from long ago.

Because they are sacred and carry for me sacred memories,

Because the tiles absorb sun and the spires are papal royalty,

Because they are grand, they are colorful,

Because they are straight and sturdy,

Because they will be here when I am not.

-JNL 1997 "Because"

"I take inspiration from the places I visit or retreat, when gaining perspective away from urban life.
If one can look at my artwork and feel calm or chaos, elation or freedom,
then I feel I have succeeded in teaching the viewer
something of the dimensionality and texture of life itself."
